Over the past century, people’s attitudes about money, income, expenses and prices – best and worst – have varied, whether they’re in the market for anything from a mattress to a motor vehicle or a mansion. This popular phrase has been customary for many years to wish everyone in the home a good night’s rest. By saying “goodnight” when retiring to the bedroom, you wish those in your home a blissful night of R & R or shuteye. Several other words and phrases are used to do likewise.
“Sweet dreams” implies that you’d like the person to only dream about things, people and events that evoke pleasant thoughts, emotions and sensations. “Sleep tight” is used in the same context whilst also indicating that you hope that the person’s rest and sleep are deep, undisturbed, and uninterrupted.
Sleep Tight
Nevertheless, “sleep tight” originated long ago. At the time of its origin, the term had a dual meaning, one being a good wish for a good night’s rest, in much the same context as the modern version. Some sources claim that this was and still is the only meaning of the phrase and that there is no additional explanation for its origin.
Others, however, are of the opinion that sleeping tightly refers to the tightness of the ropes or thongs that were strung across the length and width of the wooden bed frame of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Much like the “riempies” (narrow leather thongs) with which chair and couch bases and backs were formed in South Africa, a similar technique was used for bed bases.
The tighter the ropes/thongs, the better the support and comfort provided by the bed – with or without the addition of a mattress. Some are even of the opinion that the homeowner might loosen the supporting ropes, rendering the bed saggy and uncomfortable, to subtly discourage guest from staying on any longer.
True or merely charming speculation, such tales are interesting, more than what might be said about mattresses of the 1800s. Only really wealthy, upper classes were able to afford mattresses that were stuffed and filled with goose or duck feathers and down. The best price wasn’t an issue.
As for the less affluent folks, they probably did their best to find comfort and support on bags or animal skin pouchesfilled with straw, leaves and other plant matter. Somewhat later, horsehair or coir fillings were used.
