Pine’s Relevance in the Furniture Industry and at Ericssons
Today’s Ericssons Mattress & Pine was – for many years – known as Ericssons Pine, something that may not be known by the younger generation. During our existence of more than 50 years, and particularly during our exclusively “pine” days, Ericssons has been synonymous with our quality, yet affordable pine furniture.
The two literally went together like a hand in glove. One might have said that one concept equated to the other; that’s how close the association was.
The “mattress” was added somewhat later. It became necessary to include “mattress” in the Ericssons’ name, because our bed and mattress sales really took off, after we’d started adding sleep systems to our growing product lines – created in response to long-standing, loyal customers’ requests.
Four Ericssons Pledges
As part of our philosophy and ethos, we have established four Ericssons pledges, one of which being that we “listen to and meet all customer requirements”. We expect these pledges to be adopted by our friendly, professional staff members, who assist our clients daily with information, suggestions and guidance to obtain the best possible products at the best possible prices. It only follows that Ericssons’ management mirrors the philosophy – hence the subsequent incorporation of mattresses in our product range and company name.

Remaining Three
We constantly strive to also adhere to the other three pledges, sincerely designed to ensure that we all remain on our toes at Ericssons. Additionally, pledges are made to better serve our existing and potential customers. The remaining three are thus:
- “Know our product/s intimately”
- “Help customers make informed decisions”
- “Match the excellence of our products to the excellence of our service”
Characteristically Pine
- Typical colouring of raw pine is pale, ranging from almost white to pale yellow. When a clear furniture oil or sealing product is applied, this timber’s distinctive and lovely grain, plus its characteristic dark knots come to the fore.
- Exceptionally popular for the manufacture of cottage-style and now other furniture
- Accepts various finishing and decorating techniques well, such a products that stain wood into a darker colour, seal the surface to make furniture somewhat water and stain resistant, paint, and particularly popular now – chalk paint in a solid colour or with an application technique that produces today’s trendy distressed look.
- Pine is relatively soft, so it’s easy to work, particularly for furniture.
- This timber is lightweight; moving and rearranging furniture presents no problem.
- In South Africa, this wood is a sustainable, renewable resource. Enormous pine plantations are found in many parts of this country.
Host of Options
Compared to numerous other timber species, sturdy, solid furniture made of pine is very affordable, so it’s not surprising that this wood species was selected for Ericssons ranges of furniture, which includes a host of options with which to furnish the entire home.
