It’s been more than 50 years since Ericssons Mattress & Pine first opened its doors on the East Rand and in Pretoria, initially trading as Ericssons Pine. A Bed without a Mattress
Depending on its support system, a bed without a mattress is hardly anything more than a platform with a top of some sort that’s raised above the level of the floor. A bed’s level of comfort and support depends almost exclusively on the item that tops it.
However, one erstwhile exception does come to mind – the bed frames that were used some time ago, during the 1800s and very early 1900s. The beds to which we refer here featured ropes or thongs that were inserted through holes in the wooden frame to provide a base to hold a sleeping pad in place.
Sleep Tight
When the bed and its mattress began sagging, the owner would tighten the thongs to firm up the base – hence the heartfelt goodnight wish that’s still in use today – “Sleep tight”. Some claim that the addition of “don’t let the bedbugs bite” became part of the goodnight wish, because the commonplace mattresses of the period were not offered for sale but consisted of homemade sacks or very large fabric pillow-like bags.
These bags were stuffed with corn husks, hay, animal pelts, kapok, or coir. Those who could afford something better might make their sleeping pads more comfortable by using cotton or wool as the stuffing. Such materials, unless changed regularly, attracted pests, notably bedbugs, the scourge of many a bed, mattress and bedding and its occupant.
The appearance of bedbugs and the like was prevalent in households where standards of hygiene and cleanliness that one expects nowadays weren’t observed. However, there is some doubt about the origin of that particular phrase. Nonetheless, beds did need periodic tightening because ropes and thongs could and would stretch.
